AHEAD AND AHEAD WE MUST NOT FALL DOWN WE MUST NOT STOP TOWARD OUR DREAM
TOWARD OUR DREAM WE CANNOT GIVE UP
(End of song, everybody is excited, being satisfied with what they have done.)
JAMES
Ok. Great! I think our work was not in vain last night.
ROBERT
But It looks that I already saw your dance somewhere. It’s almost the same one in Fame, isn’t it?
JAMES
Do you think so? MARY, what do you think of the dance?
MARY
I am not sure but it looks there is something similar between two.
LINDA
What are you talking about? This is not an imitation.
MARY
I didn’t say it’s an imitation.
ROBERT
Well, let’s make a gala show with some famous scenes from different shows instead of trying to make a new one! I will work on the script.
JAMES
Impossible, we already decided to make a new one.
MARY
You are right, but being decided can change into to decide. Let’s do something easy, ok? It is too hard to make a new one.
JOHN
Do you pay school to do something easy?
MARY
What?
ROBERT
Please, listen to me please. Let’s make a gala with Grease, Cats, Phantom of the Opera, etc.
JOHN
Stop, stop to say about gala. Why do you try to bother our work? We did it hard last night: dance, songs and lines as well. Am I right?
LINDA
Of course.
ROBERT
Yes, imitation might be the matrix of creation, but you imitated too much.
LINDA
No, I don’t agree with you. This is not an imitation. I have worked on it for all night long. You got me wrong. I just referred to it a little.
MARY
Ok, I see. You might be right. Is there pure creation? Everything must be used at least once.
LINDA
Of course, so, this is not an imitation, isn’t it?
ROBERT
However, this is an imitation. There is a little difference in order but all the dance moves are completely same. Every movement seems to be seen somewhere.
LINDA
ROBERT….
MARY
Ok, ok, everything is good and everybody is good too. Anyway you have only one week until the deadline. In one week you should be in the middle of the rehearsal, and designers have to finish their design and go into production. And me, I have to finish the bill design, playbill design and advertising design and lots of things to do. You have to finish before. Ok? After you make it, I can start to work, ok? You should not postpone this time.
MICHAEL
I think we should decide right now whatever it is. Maybe we can do a gala easily.
JOHN
Stop! Sotp! I will kill you if you again talk about gala!
ROBERT
I know you worked hard, but…
JAMES
(to ROBERT) Let’s think again.
JOHN
Oh my God. You decide, I don’t know. (going back.)
ROBERT
JOHN, JOHN…
JAMES
OK, ok. Everybody, look at me. LINDA! Come on here. (to others) I am working on the dance with LINDA, so you have to make your scenes now. Anyway we must finish all these scenes today. If not, nobody can go home. OK? Everybody, action stations!
(Everybody goes to their places. Music starts and everybody, separated in several groups, works on their scene.)
SONG2 CREATION IS DIFFICULT / ALL CAST
A
GOING AHEAD AND TURNING BACK
B
LOOK CAREFULLY AT WHAT YOU HAVE TO SEE
C
REPEAT AFTER ME WITHOUT SAYING ANYTHING (WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW?)
MICHAEL
WHY I AM ALWAYS IN ENSEMBLE I WANT TO BA A MAIN CHARACTER
D
I DON’T KNOW I REALLY DON’T KNOW (I AM NOT COMPETENT)
JAMES
(to LINDA)
Isn’t really there something new and fresh?
LINDA
OK. I have another dance. First of all, see it and we can talk later.
MARY
Let’s try to make a gala show! OK?
LINDA
Are you seeing?
JOHN
Oh my God! You are so stupid. Who says like you?
A
Please, God, help us!
JOHN
Oh my God!
ALL
I DON’T LIKE THAT I DON’T LIKE NEW CREATION X2
I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY WE MAKE A NEW MUSICAL
ROBERT
OK. I am a writer. Once you finish a scene, just let me see it. I may take care of your scene.
JAMES
No, no, no. It’s too prosaic. I want something more concentrated and more compressed.
MICHAEL
Oh, I am frustrated. Let’s make it better.
A
I DON’T LIKE A NEW CREATION (I DON’T UNDERSTAND)
B
I FEEL SLEEPY (I WANT TO SLEEP)
ALL
I AM IRRITATED I AM ANGRY WHY DO WE CREATE A NEW ONE
JAMES
Oh my God. Are you saying this is a scene? Oh my God. Do it again, completely do it again!
C
I DON’T LIKE IT I REALLY DON’T LIKE IT I DON’T KNOW WHY WE DO A NEW CREATION
ALL
I AM ANNOYED I AM ANNOYED, ANNOYED OF CREATION
(Light out.)
2 Rehearsal
(Rehearsal time. The scene is composed of dance, song, lines and some ad libs.)
JAMES
OK, let’s start rehearsal. Move, move, what are you doing now? Straight!
LINDA
I am not responsible for those who may have injures during rehearsal because of lack of body warmth.
JOHN
Let’s start. OK. Come on here, ok, let’s start warming the body.
SONG3 PRACTICE
CHORUS
FIRST LET’S START BY AEIOU, TO MAKE GOOD PRONUNCIATION
Stretch our body farther and farther making our bodyline s-line
(Acting team)
JOHN
OK? Do you know how to do it now? Do what I say, it is the best way.
A
Yes, I see. I understand, but my body doesn’t follow my brain’s orders.
JOHN
So….
B
So you have to work hard until your body is adapted, you know, that is what you wanted to say?
JOHN
Exactly, but….
(Writing team)
C
ROBERT, is it too stereotypical to write a love story?
ROBERT
That is what people say. If we write about school, it looks like Fame, if we speak other than human, people say it looks like Cats. Is there something new and original?
C
I really don’t know. I think I can write, but writing a script is more difficult because it reflects acting, curtain, lines…. It is not easy. We don’t have enough time.
ROBERT
You are right. That’s a problem.
C
NEW CREATION IS TOO DIFFICULT, MAY WE NOT BE COMPETENT, HOWEVER THAT IS WHAT WE HAVE TO FINISH
ROBERT
WE DON’T HAVE TIME TO DO NOTHING, BUT WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING BECAUSE EVERYBODY IS LOOKING AT US
DUET
ONCE AGAIN, WE HAVE TO START WE HAVE TO SHOW WHAT WE CAN DO WE CANNOT GIVE UP LIKE THIS, WE CANNOT GIVE UP LIKE THIS
LINDA
A break of 10 minutes!
(JOHN and PATRICIA, a loving couple, are dating each other. Some stay on the stage practicing alone or together with others, others leave the stage.)
PATRICIA
I am hungry.
JOHN
Didn’t you have breakfast? You’d better have it.
PATRICIA
I tried but I woke up late.
JOHN
I brought something to eat, anticipating this situation.
PATRICIA
EVEN THOUGH I FEEL TIRED AND SICK, I AM SATISFIED OF BEING WITH YOU BECAUSE I LOVE YOU
JOHN
WITH YOU I CAN OVERCOME WHATEVER HAPPENS, DON’T BE AFRAID OF ANYTHING I AM ALWAYS WITH YOU FOREVER
DUET
AFTER TIME PASSES AND EVERYTHING CHANGES, WE WILL ALWAYS BE TOGETHER WITHOUT CHANGE, I WON’T LET YOU LIVE ALONE, I WILL ALWAYS WITH YOU
JOHN
Do you want to eat more?
PATRICIA
Good idea.
JOHN
What do you prefer?
PATRICIA
Coffee and donuts!
JOHN
OK, let’s get out to have them.
(They leave the stage, JAMES and MARY are on the other side of the stage.)
(JAMES and MARY)
MARY
Don’t you really want to act any more?
JAMES
…
MARY
You looked really nice on the stage.
JAMES
I think directing suits me better than acting and I think it is very helpful to have acted before.
MARY
Time passed and I think your parents are not any against more about what you want to do.
JAMES
Yes, before it was not my proper intention but now I love directing. I love this process of making a show. Yes, I agree that it is not bad either to be under the light on the stage.
MARY
Anyway I think you look better as an actor, but now it is not so bad either.
JAMES
Thanks, you also have lots of things to do.
JAMES
WHERE DO WE HAVE TO GO TO? THE EXPECTATION OF OTHERS AND MY DREAM
MARY
OUR STAGE FILLED WITH OUR EXPECTATIONS AND DREAMS THAT WE CANNOT GIVE UP, WHAT SHOULD WE DO
DUET
WHEN THE STAGE IS LIGHTED, MY HEART STARTS TO RUN FAST, EVERYTHING ON THE STAGE EXCITES ME
LINDA
(appearing) OK, the break is over. Let’s start again. Move, move! We don’t have time enough to finish our scene. OK, are you ready?
CHORUS
LET’S START BY HANDS, FIRST TURN YOUR WRIST, OPEN YOUR CHEST, PULL BACK YOUR SHOULDERS AND YOUR HANDS ON THE WAIST AND DO A SPLIT!
MARY
(appearing with camera)
Let’s take a photo, OK, every body here!
(Every student is preparing to have pictures taken.)
CHORUS
LET’S TAKE A PHOTO FOR OUR PLAYBILL UHU
WE ARE YOUNG ACTORS WHO LIKE OUR SCENE UHU
WE DON’T KNOW WELL WHAT THEATRE IS, WE DON’T KNOW A LOT ABOUT IT
BUT WE LIKE THEATRE WE ARE YOUNG ACTORS
WE ARE THE BIG STARS OF TOMORROW
MARY
(having taken picture)
Good, I will send you the pictures I took email.
JAMES
OK, let’s call it a day today!
LINDA
Got it! Today it is JAMES who will buy alcohol for us!
All
OK! Call!
(Every body prepares to go home.)
WE WORK TOGETHER FOR SEVERAL HOURS EVERYDAY, LOTS OF THINGS MAKE US SMILE OR BE IRRITATED
LET’S DO OUR BEST ALWAYS, EXPECTING THE DAY WE BECOME THE BEST ACTOR IN THE WORLD
WE LIKE THEATRE WE LOVE THEATRE WE ARE YOUNG ACTORS
WE ARE ACTORS THE BEST ACTORS
(Light out.)
3 Fighting
(Rehearsal room. With PATRICIA’s scream the light on. ROBERT is lying down because he was hit JOHN.)
PATRICIA
Stop! Please stop.
JOHN
I know you write so well. So, write something and make a good art work. Don’t bother us, ok?
ROBERT
Don’t say that. Yes, I can do it, I can do what you said, but we decided to do it together. If we decided to do that we should go until the end! (hitting JOHN)
PATRICIA
Stop! You are not supposed to act like that.
JAMES
(appearing with MARY, softly)
Stop, stop, stop.
JOHN
OK. Let’s surrender here. Ok, let’s go making a gala show. Maybe, you and I, no for all of us, it is the best way.
LINDA
(appearing)
What are you talking about? Are you kidding?
JOHN
Why? Am I wrong? If we cannot, we have to give up.
JAMES
(being angry)
Stop, stop! Do you think I like it? I don’t want to work with you. I hate you. Who does want to work with you, selfish and arrogant? However, we cannot work apart, because we are member of a team.
MARY
(going in front)
What are you looking at? Don’t you want to rehearse? Stop looking around and start to rehearse!
A
However, what do we have to do?
(Everybody tries to start to warm their body.)
JAMES
(to JOHN) And, you, you are fired! I don’t need you who are always too selfish.
JOHN
OK, Good idea. Do it yourself. You are stupid, you don’t know choreography, diction, even directing and singing. Don’t play too much as a director. You don’t know anything about directing.
JAMES
What?
(They fight with each other and others try to stop them.)
ROBERT
Hey, it was me who started but now why are you fighting with each other? You are so odd. Stop, stop! What are you doing in front of everybody?
MARY
I don’t understand those kinds of hot-tempered people. It is not a good idea to fight with each other. They have to resolve problem with their words like me. (to others) Am I right? Do you remember general Seohee? Did he win fighting, no, he could get back 6 area words. (nobody reacts.) What are you doing now? OK, start stretching. Music!
(Nobody says, starts stretching.)
PATRICIA
(drawing JOHN aside)
JOHN, Why did you say that kind of thing? We are the same team.
JOHN
It was JAMES who started.
PATRICIA
How can you neglect him like that? As a matter of fact, he gets so much stress these days because of creation.
JOHN
It is not so bad. It is not a big thing.
PATRICIA
Don’t say like that. I want you to apologize first.
JOHN
Me first? Why? I didn’t do anything bad. No, I will not apologize until he first apologizes.
PATRICIA
Please, don’t do that! Don’t.
JOHN
I will.
SONG4 THINK AGAIN / PATRICIA, ALL
PATRICIA
THINK AGAIN. HE IS YOUR FRIEND WHO YOU WORK WITH. THINK OF ME AS WELL. HOW CAN I WORK WITHOUT YOU
MARY
TRY TO UNDERSTAND. HE IS YOUR FRIEND WHO YOU WORK WITH. ENDURE MORE. WE ALWAYS HAVE TROUBLES
PATRICIA MARY ROBERT
THINK AGAIN. YOU DON’T HAVE TO INSIST ON YOUR OWN THOUGHTS. TRY TO UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER
PATRICIA MARY ROBERT JOHN JAMES
I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I DON’T KNOW WHAT THE SOLUTION IS. I DON’T KNOW WHICH WAY TO CHOOSE
WHAT IS SURE, WE ALL LOVE DOING THEATRE
(During the song, they try to reconcile JOHN and JAMES.)
JOHN
(to JAMES)
OK, stop to sigh. The sky will fall down to us. Let’s get started all together.
JAMES
.. ..
JOHN
OK, come on here everybody. Let’s continue our work. We need new idea.
ROBERT
Good, Give me your idea and I will manage everything.
MARY
Stop, How we can proceed creation in this odd situation? No, I don’t want to do that. Instead I want to go in the woods.
JOHN
In the woods?
MICHAEL
In the woods?
JAMES
(to MARY)
MARY, what are you thinking of now?
MARY
A membership training for creation creation and because of creation! What’s your idea?
A
(excited)
OK, We go on the trip. Good idea, OK. How about to go far, Thailand, How about Thailand?
(Everybody looks at him but pretends not to see him.)
JAMES
(to MARY) What are you talking about?
JOHN
What? Membership training! A happy trip!
ROBERT
That’s a good idea. Where do you think is best?
JAMES
Well, I don’t think we have enough time….
B
Good idea! As he said (pointing A) why not Thailand or the Philippines.
(Everybody looks at him.)
C
(coming ahead) Are you kidding? Shut up!!
B
….
C
I am sorry. I apologize instead.
MICHAEL
Ha ha ha…
MARY
Isn’t it a good idea? Where? Where do you think is the best? How about Chuncheon?
JAMES
Hey, I don’t think we have enough time….
JOHN
Chuncheon? Good idea! I once took a train to Chuncheon in spring. It was really wonderful. The mountain along the railroad was completely covered various flowers.
PATRICIA
(voice changed) Really? With whom did you take the train?
JOHN
With whom? Well, I couldn’t remember that well…
ROBERT
PATRICIA! Stop, it is his past. It doesn’t have to do with you with whom he took the train before. You want to get into quarrel with him? He could get the train with his ex-girlfriend. What’s the matter? I cannot understand woman.
JAMES
(hurrying) Please, listen to me!
PATRICIA
(discouraged) OK, got it. You are right. OK, let’s go to Chuncheon.
MARY
Great! I found a good place, Nami Island!
JOHN
Nami Island? Good, good, Let’s go to Nami Island!
PATRICIA
Weird! You went there with your ex-girlfriend?
(Everybody looks at her.)
PATRICIA
Hahaha… OK, let’s go to Nami Island. Hahaha.
JAMES
Please, we don’t have enough time!
D
(coming ahead) OK. I will accompany those who will go to shop for food, and I will make discount. Let’s get together in front of gateway at 6 pm.
E
I will bring Kimchi. My father launched a new Kimchi factory. Like a sort of promotion, I will bring all the Kimchi for this time. Once you try it, and if you find it good, please order some from me. I will give you some discount and the best service.
F
So. I will bring the rice. We wanted to sell it, but even though we sell all the stock, we will lose money. So we thought to stock it and wanted to give it to pigs, but, this time, instead of pigs, I will give it to you and….
(Something is weird. F started to escape and the remaining students follow after him. Everybody leaves the stage. The music starts again and the students reappear changed and ready to go to MT.)
SONG5 WE / ALL
WE ARE GOING TO TAKE A TRIP WE ARE GOING TO TAKE A M.T. MEMBERSHIP TRAINING
WE SHARE EVERYTHING FACING OUR FACES EVERYDAY, WHATEVER HAPPY OR SAD
SINCE WE MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME WE WERE TOGETHER UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD
WE ARE GOING TO TAKE A TRIP WE ARE GOING TO TAKE A M.T. MEMBERSHIP TRAINING
WE ARE GOING TO TAKE A TRIP TO MAKE OUR HISTORY
A
Let’s go!
(Lighting changes and they show their trip until the destination. After arriving, they have some physical training and some activities.)
SONG6 TO NAMI
THE REASON FOR OUR TRIP IS TO BLOOM
THE BLOOM IN OUR COLLEGE LIFE IS CREATION
EUGENE ONEIL, ARTHUR MILLER AND SAMUEL BECKETT WE ARE READY
MICHAEL
Everybody, we are arriving at Nami Island. Get down your belongings from the bus and get together.
(Getting out of the bus, they continue to do activities)
THE REASON OF OUR TRIP IS TO BLOOM
WE ALL KNOW THE REASON BUT OUR MIND IS ALREADY ELSEWHERE
I AM NOT A TOP DIRECTOR, A PLAYWRIGHT, NOT A CELEBRITY
WE ARE ACTORS, JUST STUDENTS
WE ARE HERE NAMESUM
(The song finishing, the scene finishes. Light out.)
4 Nami Island
(Night, sound of night. Courage testing in the night. After that, everybody sits making a circle. Already they drank. Some sleep lying on the ground, others continue drinking. JOHN and PATRICIA are in another place having their own date.)
ROBERT
(to MARY) Stop. I don’t want to talk with you who have no conviction. Why do you do theatre? Not knowing why you do theatre, you say you love theatre, the performing arts market of this contury is thus and thus… you don’t have right. Right?
JAMES
Don’t say like that. She just likes theatre. That’s all. That is her pleasure to do theatre. If somebody stops her doing that, she might kill herself. Thanks for coming to see our show. Your phones, get rid of all of them in trash, and shut up and if you don’t applaud or you sleep or make poker face… you will see how I get angry.
MARY
OK, you are right! I like that. I don’t know why I like doing theatre but I will do it until I die.
ROBERT
You don’t know. My parents didn’t want me to do theatre. However I like theatre, but you are so stupid that I feel stuffy.
MICHAEL
Stop. Stop it! You are so drunk.
JAMES
What? This place is not for you. OK? This is for senior….
MARY
Let him talk.
ROBERT
When I am on the stage, I can meet everybody I want to meet, my parents, my first love, everybody. When I am on the stage, the audience is already filled with my friends not strangers for me.
JAMES
Did you eat crap or something? That’s your simple speaking of a daydreamer and it is too conceptual and abstract thought. Your thought must be filtered. For me, when I am on the stage, I can only feel a black hole and my body. And after the show finishes, I feel all my body empty completely. That’s like a drug.
MICHAEL
I think it’s time for us to speak about our creation. We have to go back tomorrow. We don’t have enough time.
JAMES
Don’t interrupt when seniors speak, OK?
A
(yelling sleeping) Shup up! Who makes noise disturbing others sleeping. Shut up, shup up! (suddenly standing up and walking around like a sleepwalker.) Who? Who made noise? Who talks so noisily? If you continue to … (lying again on the ground and sleeping)
MARY
(smiling and stopping JAMES) OK, good, Stay calm.
ROBERT
(suddenly) Anyway, our creation, I have a good idea popped up.
MICHAEL
What is it?
ROBERT
It is a really wonderful idea. It will be a immortal work.
JAMES
Don’t beat around the bush.
ROBERT
OK. There is a festival of bees. In the festival they have to choose a bee which can go to heaven. The bee can have new life…. How about this story?
MICHAEL
I think I heard that kind of story.
B
(awaking from sleeping) Oh, my stomach, give me water, water…
JAMES
Give him water.
B
Water, water. Oh my stomach. (suddenly standing up and vomiting to ROBERT)
ROBERT
Oh, no. Take him to the restroom. Oh my god. And you (to MICHAEL) What? You have something to say about what I said? What have you already heard? Do you want again to insert yourself into our conversation?
JAMES
Hey! What’s the problem for him? What did you say? What the bee going to heaven? You want to mix all the story about bees that we already performed and cats? What is it? It is a kind of improvement of species? Are you crazy? Bee cats?
ROBERT
No, no. Listen to me until the end. The bee…
MARY
Stop! OK? (to MICHAEL) Anyway why are you doing theatre?
MICHAEL
Me? OK. When I am on the stage, for me, what I am saying… so, yes I become nice.
JAMES
What? Be nice?
MICHAEL
Yes, I just feel, I become nice. It’s all.
All
Be nice? OK, be nice.
SONG7 BE NICE / MICHAEL, CHORUS
MICHAEL
WE GO AHEAD WE ALL GO AHEAD DOING THEATRE
WE GO AHEAD BEING ON THE STAGE, WE ALL DO THEATRE
CHORUS
WHY DO WE DO THEATRE, WHY ARE WE ON THE STAGE
WHAT DO WE FEEL, WHAT DO WE SEE FROM THE STAGE
NOT IMPORTANT, IT IS NOT IMPORTANT, THEATRE IS JUST MY LIFE
WE GO AHEAD WE ALL GO AHEAD DOING THEATRE
WE GO AHEAD BEING ON THE STAGE, WE ALL DO THEATRE
(When the song finishes, the light changes making bright upper stage where PATRICIA and JOHN have time.)
SONG8 OUR LOVE / PATRICIA, JOHN
PATRICIA
STRANGE, I DON’T UNDERSTAND, I AM FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU
YOUR INNOCENT EYES AND WORDS SO TENDER
JOHN
STRANGE, I DON’T UNDERSTAND, I AM FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU
YOUR LOVELY FACIAL EXPRESSION AND EYES AND ALWAYS SMILING
PATRICIA
I want to swim.
JOHN
I cannot swim.
PATRICIA
Don’t say that. Let’s get into the water together.
JOHN
No, no, no. I really cannot swim. And you are drunk. You have not to enter the water.
PATRICIA
Don’t worry, don’t worry.
JOHN
PATRICIA.
PATRICIA
Stop. Don’t worry. You stay here waiting for me. I will get back soon.
JOHN
(…)
PATRICIA
The water is so warm. You can come. Come on in.
PATRICIA
YOUR INNOCENCE AND WARMTH INSIDE YOUR TOUGH LOOKS
I FEEL LOVE WHEN I SEE YOU, I WANT TO BE WITH YOU FOREVER
JOHN
YOUR DEEP EYES AND WARM HEART MAKE ME WARM
I WILL KEEP YOUR LOVE EMBRACING ME ALWAYS FOREVER
DUET
WE WILL LOVE FOREVER UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD, OUR LOVE THAT WILL NEVER CHANGE
PATRICIA
I HOPE WE CAN BE TOGETHER ALWAYS
JOHN
I HOPE NOTHING CANGES
DUET
I PRAY FOR OUR LOVE TO LAST FOREVER, I WILL NEVER CHANGE
JOHN
PATRICIA, where are you? I cannot find you. Get out of the water.
PATRICIA
I am here.
JOHN
Where? It’s too dark. Where are you?
PATRICIA
Don’t worry, don’t worry.
DUET
WE WILL LOVE FOREVER UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD, OUR LOVE THAT WILL NEVER CHANGE
PATRICIA
I HOPE WE CAN BE TOGETHER ALWAYS
JOHN
I HOPE NOTHING CANGES
JOHN
I PRAY FOR OUR LOVE TO LAST FOREVER, I WILL NEVER CHANGE
JOHN
PATRICIA! Get out of the water, please. Where are you? I cannot find you. Where are you? Stop, stop.
PATRICIA
…
JOHN
PATRICIA. Where are you? PATRICIA.
PATRICIA
…
JOHN
PATRICIA. PATRICIA. PATRICIA.
(JOHN, having tried to find PATRICIA, comes up on the down stage. Down stage becoming bright, everybody is sleeping on the ground.)
JOHN
(rushing into the stage) Disappeared, she’s disappeared.
JAMES
(waking up) What do you say?.
MARY
Did you have a good time with PATRICIA?
JOHN
In the water, in the water, PATRICIA, she disappeared.
ROBERT
Stop, stop playing.
JOHN
Give me back PATRICIA, give me back PATRICIA.
ROBERT
What are you talking about?
JOHN
PATRICIA! Where are you? Where are you?
MICHAEL
Something really happened?
JAMES
What happened?
JOHN
PATRICIA wanted to swim, but disappeared… she’s disappeared.
(Everybody is rushing to find PATRICIA. Pandemonium.)
SONG9 STRANGE / JOHN
STRANGE, I AM STRANGE, I AM FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU
YOUR DEEP EYES, LOVELY FACE SMILING ALWAYS LOOKING AT ME
I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU
WE WILL LOVE FOREVER UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING ELSE
UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD
JOHN
Cave, the river connecting the cave… No, no, no!
(Changing light)
JOHN
PATRICIA. PATRICIA. PATRICIA. I am sorry. I am so sorry. I kneel like this. Please forgive me. Forgive me. Because of me, because of me, you died. I cannot endure it. I cannot. No, no. Please wait, Wait. I will get you out of the water. No, no, don’t go there, It’s too deep. No, I cannot swim, I cannot save you. Please please get out of there. Please, PATRICIA. Please. Please. (falling down on himself) I am sorry. I am sorry. I cannot endure. I cannot continue my life like this. (standing up) I will leave. I cannot continue my life here because everything here reminds me of PATRICIA. I cannot. However even though I leave, our life has to continue and let’s get together in 10 years to check on how we live well. Yes we have to live the life of PATRICIA. Yes. I will live her life also. Good e everybody. (leaving the stage)
A
OK. We understand your pain. Yes, 10 years later. We live life to the full. We will not forget PATRICIA, and we will live also her life. Let time shape everything. Let’s start again. Whatever happens our living life to the full will not change. Let’s get together in 10 years. Surely.
SONG STRANGE / CHORUS
WE WILL LOVE FOREVER UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD, OUR LOVE THAT WILL NEVER CHANGE
I HOPE WE CAN BE TOGETHER ALWAYS I HOPE NOTHING CANGES
I PRAY FOR OUR LOVE TO LAST FOREVER, I WILL NEVER CHANGE
(Finishing the song, the light out. And light on again. This is kind of curtain call. The story so far is the show inSONG the show. The show is finished.)
JAMES
OK. Good job. Everybody comes on here.
(Light on and everybody gets together except JAMES.)
JAMES
I think we did a good job. Based on our true story of Membership training, even though we feel sympathy for PATRICIA and sorry for what happened and JOHN… (looking for JOHN) Where is JOHN? OK. Because our show is finished, let’s manage the stage. JOHN! JOHN!
(JOHN appears.)
JAMES
(to others) Let’s call it a day.
(The others arranging the stage, JOHN and JAMES are talking.)
JAMES
You don’t need to cry any more?
JOHN
…
JAMES
I see but stop crying. I am sorry for you and for PATRICIA. It was not a good idea to make our story a show.
JOHN
It’s good. It is not bad. PATRICIA might be satisfied.
JAMES
PATRICIA. I am sorry, forgive me.
JOHN
(crying)
JAMES
Stop crying. It was not your fault.
JOHN
I cannot forget. I cannot forget. How much did PATRICIA look for me? Not being able to breath, how much did she look for me? I am so fool. I am fool. While my lover is drowning I could not do anything. I am a fool being able to do nothing.
JAMES
OK. Cry. Cry until the end.
JOHN
I hope so. I want to cry until the end, until the shortage of tears. I want to cry. PATRICIA, PATRICIA!
SONG STRANGE RE.
STRANGE, I AM STRANGE, I AM FALLING LOVE WITH YOU
YOUR DEEP EYES, LOVELY FACE SMILING ALWAYS LOOKING AT ME
I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU
WE WILL LOVE FOREVER UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING ELSE
UNTIL THE END OF THE WORLD
(Light out.)
5 Conflict
(Students are preparing another collective creation. The scene goes like the first scene. In the first situation of this scene, it is the juniors who work, but something doesn’t go well.)
A
(in the dark) OK! (light in) Are you ready? We can start stretching.
B
No! Wait, wait! Don’t go ahead at this moment! You are so stupid. Come back again!
D
Foolish boy! Are you going to make me angry?
E
OK, OK, let’s start again!
F
Forward back and forward and again forward. Stop! Ahead not back. Why do you always get it wrong?
G
(being late) I’m sorry.
H
Let’s concentrate! We don’t have much time.
Y
Why should we make a collective creation performance?
I
It is our basic program.
K
A collective creation per semester.
A
Isn’t there any other way?
B
Why not?
C
If it is really difficult to do that, you’d better go to the theatre team.
C
If we redo existing plays, everything will work well.
I
Why do we have to do collective creation?
J
Don’t you know the reason yet?
K
No, I don’t know.
L
What do you know then?
JOHN
(appearing) OK, let’s get started.
SONG10 CREATION
A
ARE WE NOT COMPETENT ENOUGH TO MAKE A GOOD SHOW
B
NO, I AM THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL, THE MOST HANDSOME BOY, I AM THE BEST
C
MY THIS BALANCED FIGURES, BEAUTIFUL LINES LIKE A PERFECT DRAWING
D
NO, NO. IT IS TOO SIMPLE. WE NEED TO DO IT AGAIN, ONCE AGAIN.

A

C

ALL
ARE WE NOT COMPETENT ENOUGH TO MAKE A GOOD SHOW
NO, I AM THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL, THE MOST HANDSOME BOY, I AM THE BEST
MY THIS BALANCED FIGURES, BEAUTIFUL LINES LIKE A PERFECT DRAWING
NO, NO. IT IS TOO SIMPLE. WE NEED TO DO IT AGAIN, ONCE AGAIN.
(Everything is messy. At this moment, other colleagues join them and start to work all together.)
LET’S GET TOGETHER TO MAKE A COMPLETELY NEW STORY
DON’T BE AFRAID OF CREATING A NEW THING, JUST GO AHEAD
CREATING IS NOT EASY BUT WE CONTINUALLY GO AHEAD TO OUR FUTURE
WE RUN, NOTHING CAN STOP US
SO MANY DIFFERENT STORIES THAT SOMEBODY CREATED, WE ALSO ARE GOING TO MAKE A NEW STORY
A NEW CREATION TO MAKE A NEW WORLD
ROBERT
Collective creation is always difficult.
JAMES
Yes, you are right. We create a new show for every semester. It is very challenging. And unfortunately we have to do one this semester.
MICHAEL
Ok. Let’s continue we will make a good one like last semester.
A
Now about to make something shocking and symbolic.?
JAMES
Shocking and symbolic? Which one? I may have a good idea. Now about to reduce the one we made last semester shaking and symbolic?
MICHAEL
However we decide to make a new one!
(Every body looks at him.)
MARY
Maybe. Is it a good idea to have a short trip like last time?
ROBERT
Short trop?
A
Good idea! Short trip for the creation, the creation and of the creation!
B
Good idea!
C
Where will we go?
JAMES
Are you kidding? We have no time. We don’t have enough time to have a trip.
D
How about Jeju Island? I am for Jeju Island.
JOHN
No, no, no. More faraway! Long trip to Thailand!
F
Good idea. OK. Thailand!
G
Go to Thailand!
JAMES
Hey guys!!!
ROBERT
It is too far. Let’s just take a short trip. How about Nami Island like last year?
JOHN
Nami Island?
JAMES
OK. Good idea. I am for Nami Island.
MARY
I agree. He had great work from there.
JOHN
Nami Island.
MICHAEL
OK. Nami Island.
JOHN
Nami Island.
(All of a sudden, there’s something in the air.)
JOHN
Nami island? Nami island. Great idea. Let’s go. PATRICIA is waiting for me. PATRICIA, PATRICIA, wait for me. I will let you get out of the water. No, no, no, don’t go into too deep. No, please. I cannot swim, I cannot save you. PATRICIA, PATRICIA. Come on out, please, quick, come on out. PATRICIA, PATRICIA.
(He runs out of the stage. Everybody follows him.)
SONG11 TO MY FRIENDS / JOHN, CHORUS
JOHN
MY DEAR FRIENDS, PATRICIA’S FACE POPS UP TO ME AND I CANNOT ENDURE THAT.
I LEAVE NOW, I LEAVE FROM YOU. IT IS NOT OUR LAST MEETING BUT LET’S GET TOGETHER 10 YEARS LATER
I LEAVE NOW TO COME BACK. I HOPE YOU ALL UNDERSTAND ME, MY DEAR FRIENDS
CHORUS
WE ARE SAD BECAUSE YOU LEAVE US, WE ARE ANGRY BECAUSE WE HAVE TO STAY HERE, MY FRIEND, OH MY DEAR FRIEND
YOU CAN MAKE IT, YOU CAN DO IT. DON’T GIVE UP YOUR DREAM. GO AHEAD TOWARD YOUR DREAM
WE BELIEVE IN YOU. YES, WE WILL GET TOGETHER AGAIN AFTER A LONG TIME HAS PASSED
LET’S GET TOGETHER TODAY 10 YEARS LATER
(JOHN leaves the stage having finished his part of the song. Light out.)
6 10 years later
JAMES
(in dark) Please everybody, listen to me. Our professor agreed to give performances of a masterpiece instead of our new musical and recommended Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. We will hold an audition in a week and I hope everybody will be ready for it.
(Light in. Everybody is in audition. This scene continuing a bit, two actors play Laura and Jim, while the director gives instructions to them.)
Laura
(showing him the playbill) You see, this is your photo on Pirates of Penzance.
Jim
I was the protagonist in that operetta. I was baritone there.
Laura
You were really great!
Jim
Thanks.
Laura
Really, really great.
Jim
Did you listen to my song?
Laura
Yes, of course, all three times!
Jim
You are kidding
Laura
I did!
Jim
All three times?
Laura
Yes I did.
Jim
But why?
JAMES
OK. Take your time!
Laura
I just wanted to have you autograph here. (showing the playbill)
JAMES
Don’t be in a hurry.
Jim
Why didn’t you ask at that time?
Laura
Because you were always with other friends surrounded them. I didn’t have a chance.
Jim
If you just asked, I did it right now!
Laura
However…
JAMES
Pause! Once again.
Laura
I think I am…. like me.
JAMES
Very kindly and seriously,
Jim
Like you? What do you mean?
Laura
It is….
JAMES
OK. Think of your past a bit.
Jim
I was surrounded girls at that moment.
Laura
Everybody liked you.
Jim
I think so.
Laura
And you were kind to everybody.
Jim
I was.
Laura
Everybody loved you.
Jim
You also?
Laura
Of course! I did.
JAMES
OK. Be excited!
Jim
OK. Give me the playbill.
(He leaves his autograph.)
Jim
Here you are. It is too late but better than nothing.
Laura
It’s a big thing for me.
Jim
I don’t think so. My autograph, now, I don’t know what value it can have, but one day, maybe.
JAMES
Think once again and vow to yourself!
Jim
Maybe, who knows if I’ll become a celebrity.
JAMES
OK, Light out!
(Light out).
JAMES
(in the dark) Light please! Everybody on the stage please.
(Actors appear, but they are not the same actors than before and JAMES’ clothes also changed. 10 years passed.)
JAMES
We have three days until the show starts. However I am not so satisfied with what you’ve done. I remember 10 years ago when I directed this play when I was in college, and I think it was better. I ask you to keep your reputation as professional actors. We will go through it again. Control room, are you ready?
Control room
Ready!
JAMES
Got it, let’s start!
(Light changes and new actors play the same scene again. The actors are not satisfied and JAMES isn’t either.)
BARBARA (Laura)
(showing him the playbill) You see, this is your photo on Pirates of Penzance.
ERIC (Jim)
I was the protagonist in that operetta. I was baritone there.
BARBARA (Laura)
You were really great!
ERIC (Jim)
Thanks.
BARBARA (Laura)
Really, really great.
ERIC (Jim)
Did you listen to my song?
BARBARA (Laura)
Yes, of course, all three times!
ERIC (Jim)
You are kidding
BARBARA (Laura)
I did!
ERIC (Jim)
All three times?
BARBARA (Laura)
Yes I did.
ERIC (Jim)
But why?
BARBARA (Laura)
I just wanted to have you autograph here. (showing the playbill)
ERIC (Jim)
Why didn’t you ask at that time?
BARBARA (Laura)
Because you were always with other friends surrounded them. I didn’t have a chance.
ERIC (Jim)
I you asked, I did it right now!
BARBARA (Laura)
However…
BARBARA (Laura)
I think I am…. like me.
ERIC (Jim)
Like you? What do you mean?
BARBARA (Laura)
It is….
ERIC (Jim)
I was surrounded girls at that moment.
(JAMES gives sign to turn out the light and the light turned out.)
ERIC
(stopping) What’s the matter? Why was the light turned off? JAMES! What is it? Is it right the light turns off here? (The light turns on again) What is it? What do you want? It is difficult to make theatre with beginners. Let’s take a break! Hey, give me a cigarette.
JAMES
(trying to smile) OK, I’m sorry, but, ERIC, I think you should show your feelings a bit more.
ERIC
What? What did you say? You told me about your college life of 10 years ago, and now, what do you want from me? Show what? Do you know what the theatre is? Yes, you directed some theatres and what? I already have been here for 30 years, OK? With your some experience of directing, do you want to change me? And do you want to teach me? A saucy young kipper! Get rid of me from casting. I cannot continue.
JAMES
ERIC, that is not what….
ERIC
Shut up! Do you think you became a big director? What do you know about the theatre? Don’t try to dispute about things. Oh you are the director? Yes I know you are the director, but so what? Are you a king? No, no. If I do, you have to follow me without saying anything because I know what I do. OK? It has worked so far. You want to change everything. You don’t know anything. Stop doing theater like that.
JAMES
(pushing him out) OK. I will stop. I will stop. OK. You can do it well. Your theatre is so fucked up because of what you do. OK. You continue like that. I will stop. Go, disappear! Go! Disappear!
SONG12 DISAPPEAR! / JAMES
DISAPPEAR, YOU ALL DISAPPEAR, YOU WHO DON’T THINK
DISAPPEAR, YOU ALL DISAPPEAR, I DON’T NEED THE ACTORS LIKE YOU
I MAY STILL BE TOO YOUNG AND NOT SMART ENOUGH, BUT I THINK
YOU WHO DON’T THINK HAVING ONLY A BODY, DISAPPEAR, DISAPPEAR
I WILL CONTINUE MY WAY ALONE
(The actors leave the stage and the scene changes into Nami.)
ROBERT
(appearing with MARY) So you stopped?
JAMES
Yes, that is what happened. I cannot continue this work.
MARY
This is not your first time. You have worked about for 10 years in the field and you still don’t know how to direct actors? Not so strong outgoing temper, no.
JAMES
Maybe I’d rather go to countryside to be a farmer.
ROBERT
No, you don’t know anything. And you chant to go to the countryside whenever you have a problem, I don’t know how much he has problem but I think you also have a problem.
JAMES
What? What did I do?
ROBERT
You turned off the light?
JAMES
And what can I do? I was really angry!
ROBERT
Ok, you can do it.
JAMES
Yes I can do it.
ROBERT
Got it.
MARY
Yes. You are right.
JAMES
Yes I am right to turn off the light. Oh God, I cannot turn off the light when I want! (standing and yelling) Oh my God. Go to hell!
MARY
That’s life.
ROBERT
Anyway, it’s only us here?
MARY
Yes, everybody is busy. Being busy is a good sign.
JAMES
Really. I am angry. I am also busy.
ROBERT
Be patient. Don’t be angry. They are all adults and there are some who became parents. OK? You must learn to be patient.
JAMES
And we are here.
ROBERT
You also drove out someone else.
MARY
You are right. We are not in college. You have to realize it. You said something happened 10 years ago. And it was not so polite.
JAMES
He was really bad, I bet. It was rather bad than we have worked.
ROBERT
I don’t think so. He is in his place now because he has a certain ability to be there. However if you disregard all these things who can listen to what you say?
JAMES
Well, he was bad and I didn’t like it. Do I have no right to ask what I want as a director.
MARY
OK. Forget it. Forget what you have to forget.
ROBERT
You are right. Forget everything and take a drink.
JAMES
OK. For me, for this stupid man who can do his work well.
All
Cheers!
JAMES
Anyway, nobody knows the news from JOHN?
MARY
No. I think he is not in our field at least. If he works like us, we could have met before.
ROBERT
What does he do and where?
MARY
Who knows? 10 years have passed without any news.
JAMES
Maybe, he forgot today’s appointment.
MARY
I think so.
JAMES
I think it is fortune for him not to work in theatre, because he doesn’t need to have a bad experience like me.
MARY
Everything has its pros and cons.
ROBERT
You are right. We experienced lots of good and bad things.
JAMES
How much is it wonderful if we can go back 10 years ago.
MARY
10 years ago? It was really nice. We had persistence, courage and power. And we also had a dream that we could have everything with a galss of wine.
JAMES
Dream…
SONG13 THE TIME WE HAVE SPENT / ROBERT, JAMES, MARY
THE TIME WE HAVE SPENT, 10 YEARS OF TIME LIKE DREAMS, BUT WHICH IS NOT SHORT
WHOEVER TALKED ABOUT WHATEVER, WE DIDN’T GIVE UP OUR HOPE
EVERYTHING IS NOT EASY, I DIDN’T ACHIEVE ANYTHING SO FAR
HOWEVER I HAVE STILL HOPE, I WILL NOT GIVE UP
I HOPE I HAVE A DREAM TO ACHIEVE
JAMES
I think the life is not easy at all. It is hard to live even though I repeat every day I can do well, I can do well. I am scared of life.
ROBERT
You are right. We started from a little pond and now we are in a huge sea. The waves are strong and we don’t have many things to be protected. Yes, it is not easy to go ahead overcoming all these things.
JAMES
Until when our life is so difficult? Already ten years passed after our graduation. I look back upon that 10 years and I think I didn’t achieve anything. I am ashamed to see all my friends and my parents… I feel sad, just sad. Everybody looks to live well, only I feel I didn’t do anything.
ROBERT
It is not only you who feel like that. Everybody expects the happy future feeling just like you.
MARY
JOHN, where are you? What are you doing?
ROBERT
(yelling quietly) JOHN! How are you? Are you good? We miss you. JOHN!
JAMES
(more loudly) And we are sorry. PATRICIA! Are you good? Are you here? We are really sorry, sorry. We miss you, too. PATRICIA!
MARY
PATRICIA! We are really sorry. We should have come back together. We are really sorry.
ROBERT
PATRICIA.
JAMES
I am reminded of the old days.
ROBERT
Yes. We were not mature. I regret that I didn’t write script so well.
MARY
I regret not to be so good at advertising.
JAMES
I regret not to direct well.
SONG13RE. THINGS WE LOST
THINGS WE LOST, WE TALKED AND MOVED AS WE FELT
WE DID WHAT WE WANTED WHOEVER SAID WHATEVER
HOWEVER WE CANNOT DO THAT NOW, WE CANNOT DO THAT NOW
ROBERT
Do you remember? I sometimes think that what happened here that day is just a dream. I don’t know why that cruel memory turned out as a kind of reminiscence.
JAMES
Since that day, we all are suddenly mature. And when JOHN left, I don’t know, something stimulated us, we all felt that we have to do this work forever feeling a kind of sorrow. And we ran and ran without stopping and without looking back, maybe to find something or to forget something.
MARY
Yes, eventually we find and forget again.
HOWEVER WE CANNOT DO THAT NOW, WE CANNOT DO THAT NOW
CAN I FIND AGAIN THE LOST THINGS OF MY YOUNG PERIOD
ROBERT
I miss that time. If I could get back again at that time, I would be better.
MARY
I think so.
JAMES
Anyway, we lived hard at that time.
ROBERT
You are right, and many times, we went to drink not going back home.
MARY
Well, whenever the rehearsal finishes, we could go to drink.
JAMES
Do you remember that, one day, we had drunken all night and we went to school early. And that day, we were really scolded the professor.
MARY
That’s what I am saying. We avoided meeting him some moment after that.
ROBERT
We sometimes quarreled with each other, blamed each other, but we were so naïve and we didn’t think other things. We worked hard.
JAMES
Your are right. We need that original intention. Without thinking other things, we had only a goal and we did our best without thinking other things. Because we had and kept that original intention, we could still work in this area.
(They look back upon their past. On the upper stage, the scene of past goes on. The students are in rehearsal like first scene. This upper scene continues until the end.)
MARY
OK. Let’s go back home.
ROBERT
OK. (to JAMES) Don’t turn off from now on.
JAMES
No, I have lots of things to say. It was not my fault.
(At this moment the great actor appears. They all are surprised.)
JAMES
ERIC….
ERIC
JAMES? What are you doing now?
JAMES
I also want to know what you are doing now.
ERIC
Me? I am just taking a walk.
M & R
Hi, ERIC, How are you?
ERIC
What? Are you friends with each other?
M & R
Yes. We are.
ERIC
I think JAMES has really an outgoing character.
ROBERT
I am sorry for that. We are now talking about it to him.
MARY
He will not do that anymore.
ERIC
(approaching JAMES and grabbing his hand) Thanks, JAMES.
All
…
ERIC
I had time to take a look back at myself. How much I struggle to reach where I am now. How often I took look back at myself. Do I still look back at myself…. I am really thankful for you for giving me this chance.
JAMES
…
ERIC
As a matter of fact, I often came here to look back at myself, to correct my faults and to struggle more. At that moment, I had lots of things to correct and to look back. However when I become famous and busy, I could not do such things and I was drawn my schedule. Of course nobody told me about my faults. So I became a correct man always. Gradually I built my own empire and live inside without having time to correct my faults. You gave me a chance to do that. As people said, we need to return to our original intention. Original intention, I think it is the mirror which reflects where we are. JAMES, thanks. Let’s make a good show.
JAMES
I am sorry, ERIC.
ERIC
I am sorry, and thanks.
MARY
ERIC, let’s take a shot with us.
ERIC
Why not?
ROBERT
Welcome, ERIC!
ERIC
Thank you. OK. Cheers!
JAMES
Good, Cheers!
SONG7 RE. BE NICE / MICHAEL, CHORUS
MICHAEL
WE GO AHEAD WE ALL GO AHEAD DOING THEATRE
WE GO AHEAD BEING ON THE STAGE, WE ALL DO THEATRE
CHORUS
WHY DO WE THEATRE, WHY ARE WE ON THE STAGE
WHAT DO WE FEEL, WHAT DO WE SEE FROM THE STAGE
NOT IMPORTANT, IT IS NOT IMPORTANT, THEATRE IS JUST MY LIFE
WE GO AHEAD WE ALL GO AHEAD DOING THEATRE
WE GO AHEAD BEING ON THE STAGE, WE ALL DO THEATRE
JAMES
ERIC. We had an appointment here that we had made 10 years ago. I think I have to come back here more frequently. I think I have more and more things to do a self-examination.
ERIC
Great! Let’s come back here, to Nami Island, no, a self-examination island from where we can start again.
JAMES
I will fill my mind with a new mind, no with my original intention.
WHY DO WE DO THEATRE, WHY ARE WE ON THE STAGE
WHAT DO WE FEEL, WHAT DO WE SEE FROM THE STAGE
(End.)
